Winix Plasmawave 9000 Air Purifier Review

The Winix Plasmawave 9000 air purifier uses a pre-filter, HEPA air filter, nano silver filter and carbon filter to remove allergens, dust, and pollen from the air.  The Winix Plasmawave air purifier has a washable carbon filter but it is very thin and we do not recommend this air purifier for odor removal as there is not a sufficient amount of carbon to effectively remove odors from a room. The Plasmawave 9000 is energy star compliant and has several features you would not expect in a mid-priced product such as dust and odor sensors with an automatic fan speed operation. In most cases the automatic operation was handy but in the presence of sprays such as hair spray it would go to the high fan speed and would not settle down to a lower fan speed without us manually adjusting it. We have seen this model or similar models sold through Sears under the Kenmore name but as of the time of this review Sears is only carrying the replacement air filters.

Approximate Price: $549

Overall Air Cleaner Rating: 8.3/10

  1. Ease of Use Rating:  1.5 out of 2. The Winix Plasmawave air purifier was easy to set up and operate. There are several filters within the air purifier to keep track of to clean or replace and the control panel is a little confusing with a lot of flashing lights. The filter replacement indicator is handy in knowing when to replace the air filter. The filter requires replacement every 6 months but there is no cleaning involved.
  2. Air Flow: 1.5 out of 2. The Winix Plasmawave 9000 air purifier has a max air flow of 180 cfm (cubic feet per minute) in our testing on the higher fan speeds so in our opinion it can clean rooms in the 270 sq ft range( 20’ x 14’).  The noise level at the highest fan speed is louder than we feel most users would want while in a room and found the Winix air purifier to be similar in noise level to other leading HEPA air purifiers.
  3. Filter Efficiency:  2.6 out of 3. The Winix air purifier removed 88% of the particles that were passing through the air purifier.  This places the Winix air purifier in the top half of air purifier performance.
  4. Consumer Feedback:  2.7 out of 3. In searching the web for customer reviews we found very few reviews. For the reviews we did find most gave the Plasmawave a 5 star rating and a 4.3 star rating overall.  Many positive comments were given for the ability to remove dust and pollen as well as some ability to remove VOC's.
